comes crashing down. good evening i'm gasia mikaelian. >> and i'm frank somerville. we begin with live pictures of that crane that collapsed next to the bay bridge. we were live with details and pictures right after it happened. right now what they're doing is preparing it so they can slowly move it out of that area. incredibly here no one was hurt. but as you can see here, there's not much of that crane. the crane was being used to put out supports. and our consumer editor tom vacar is live with what happened to the crane. >> reporter: this whole situation surrounds two scenarios. one did something break. two did someone screw up. treasure island sailing center board member genther was not just a bystander. he took pictures as soon as it

happened. >> it was very clear that a major piece of the bridge and some of the paraphernalia under it were coming crashing down. one of the cranes came under it, one did not. the noise was huge and the massive metal coming down was pretty dramatic. >> reporter: the support were used to support the bridge roadway before the massive cable picked up all that weight just a few weeks ago. >> the crane was assisting with removal of some of the false work, the temporary supports beneath the bridge and it tipped over. >> reporter: we went out on a boat to get a closer look. since there's still a lot of metal in the air, the coast guard is keeping everybody who doesn't need to be on the site away from the site. >> reporter: caltrans, the contractor and federal osha will conduct an investigation on why what happened happened. >> i don't know if this will impact the schedule long term. >> reporter: the new span being

ken clutch. i spoke to his father, still in shock over what happened early this morning. >> reporter: the fiery end to this fiery accident. >> reporter: this is how the shooting at the heart of las vegas ended. after 4:00 a.m. someone in a black range rover opened fire on the driver of this dark gray massoroti sending it crashing into a taxi cab which burst into flames killing the driver and passenger inside. >> i ran over there to try to help the driver of the massoroti. he was breathing at the time but ambulance came and i don't think he made it. >> reporter: the driver of the massoroti was from oakland living in las vegas. it all started in the parking lot. >> clearly is suspects in this shooting have no regards for the lives and safety of others.

finding those involved is a top priority. >> reporter: while the family of the massoroti driver was too distraught to talk on camera today, a friends told us he was oakland born and known by everyone. good man, hard life, very sad loss. at least three others were injured including a passenger in the massoroti. they've asked authorities in several states including kraáf kraá -- including california to be on the look out for the suspect. live in the newsroom, eric rasmussen. back to more live pictures on newschannel 2. you see that crane collapse right now what's happening is crews are preparing to remove that crane from beneath the bay bridge. again this happened about 12:30 this afternoon. the crane just completely collapsed. if there's any good news, is that no one was injured after that crane fell down. live pictures from news chopper

2, we'll keep you posted on the progress as they move that crippled crane out of the area. two couples challenging proposition eight filed a brief today urging the supreme court to strike down california's ban on same-sex marriage. the brief also urges justices to declare all such state laws unconstitutional. san francisco city attorney dennis herr era also filed a stay. the sheriff's office is investigating a body that was found in the water just south of at&t park. coast guard officers spotted a body near the bay. that's right where anchor beer announced they are moving. so far no details on the person's age, gender or cause

of death. a man charged with possessing arms and threatening the life of leland yee appeared in court. santa clara county prosecutors have charged him with 10 felonies among them three counts of illegally possessing assault weapons, two counts of possessing bomb making materials and one count each for making criminal threats. a man is being treated for life threatening injuries after being shot during an apparent home invasion robbery in east oak land. officers responded to a report of shooting just before 10:00 a.m. at the home on 79th avenue right near lockwood street. they found the man suffering from a gunshot wound. at this point police are still investigating but say they were told by witnesses the man was shot while attempting a home robbery. police are planning a buy back in palo alto. this buy back that we're watching, was so successful officers had to hand out ious

and pay them later. they'll pay from $100 to $300 depending on the gun. people will have not have to give their name to hand in the gun. happening now, members of the immigration rally are holding a protest. these are live pictures now of that demonstration. members of the movement represent students at several local colleges. they say the time is now for comprehensive immigration reform sometime this year. a new exclusive ktvu field poll shows that 90% of californians support a citizenship program for long time undocumented immigrants who have a job, have learned english and pay back taxes. 73% also support an increase in the number of visas issued to immigrants who have an advanced

degree. at the same time, 65% want to crack down at the border to keep illegal immigrants out and 57% want stiffer penalties against employers and individuals who hire illegal immigrants. a 32-year-old man pled guilty to charge that is he murdered a 15-year-old girl in fairfield. these are pictures of 32-year- old anthony lamar jones. the judge did not allow cameras into the courtroom today. jones is accused of murder, rape, kidnapping and lewd acts on a child. a homeless man found the naked body of janell conway alan in a park. we spoke to her mother and sister for the first time. john sasaki says that they say her death may have saved other's lives. >> reporter: family and friends

gathered to remember conway allen. her mother spoke briefly to us. >> my daughter was an awesome person. she changed a lot of people's lives. she even changed mine. >> reporter: janell disappeared after school three weeks ago today and her body was found the next morning. we met several other people who knew her well. one the mother of janell's ex- girlfriend. >> she feels bad about what happened because i believe if he was there, i believe he would have made sure she got home. >> reporter: the other the father of the girl who walked home with janell every day except the day janell was kidnapped because she was home sick. >> i just hope they have the right individual. a detective came and interviewed my daughter and he sounded pretty certain this was the right guy. >> reporter: fairfield police came to the memorial but revealed no new details about the case. janell attended green valley middle school.

her principal said her death scared their school. >> there really was the missing of janell and this could have happened to me. >> reporter: we also spoke to janell's sister. >> she sang beautifully. she wanted to go on american idol. she wanted to make sure everybody knew she could sing. she would say, you want to hear me sing. >> reporter: janell's mother says that her daughter's death saved many other's lives. meaning she put a killer in jail and kept him from killing anybody else. the los angeles times is reporting that commissioner bud selig's office has given the a's tentative guidelines for the move. sources say if the a's satisfy the league's concern, bud selig may allow team owners to vote on the move. a's fans we spoke to had mixed

released just this morning. 362,000 americans filed for jobless benefits for the first time last week. that's up about 20,000 from the week before. the labor department also reports that 3.1 million people filed for continuing unemployment benefits. stocks closed lower to end concern the federal reserve may cut back its bond buying program. the dow lost 46 points, s & p500 fell as well to postits worse two day loss since november. nasdaq lost 32. it's been one of the bloodiest days in the syrian civil war with reports of three bomb attacks. the deadliest attack was a car bomb for the ruling party. the attacks come as rebels step up their attack on the capital in their effort to oust

two days from now, san francisco china town will usher in the year of the snake. rob roth joins us live with why the rout is different this year. >> reporter: we're under the rotunda here in city hall where a celebration is about to begin. about 200 people are expected at the lunar year kick off. mayor lee is expected to speak and we're also expecting lion dancers. the massive chinese new year parade is set for sunday night and there's still a lot of work

to do to get ready. for this crew of float builders it's the home stretch. they are preparing the last of the 24 float that is will highlight this year's chinese new year parade the biggest outside of china. the float builders reported being way behind schedule but now are planning to build way more floats. >> those are massive amounts to buy. and to actually put on the float. so you never know if you have enough until you get down to that last little golden coin. >> reporter: one unique coin still under construction is an oil pump. during the parade, someone will be inside this small closet

expecting from the 10 major lending companies. most of the money will go to reduced or forgive mortgages for about 100,000 borrowers. some of the money will also go to reimburse homeowners involved in foreclosures or short sales. more details now on the settlement. bank of america will have the largest pay out. $10.8billion. next up is jp morgan chase it will pay out 3.2 million to more than 26,000 borrowers. and wells fargo in san francisco is on the hook for $2 billion. analysts say numbers out today show real estate has become a seller's market once again. the sales of existing single family homes picked up .2 of a percent in january compared to december. even more homes would have been sold if the supply hasn't been so tight. the union representing workers at a pleasanton country club is ending a boycott and

asking customers to come back. unite here says that their boycott is now over. it wasn't until this month that a new contract was ratified. under the deal workers will pay $225 a month for family health care. that compares to $956 a month as previously proposed by management. an alaska state senator wants bounties on sea otters. the otters may be cute and cuddly to tourists but they are eating habits are a threat to shellfish beds in alaska. he introduced a bill for the state to pay $100 for each sea otter lawfully killed under the u.s. marine mammal protection act. stedman says he doesn't want otters eradicated but says something needs to be done to slow down their population growth. yosemite may be forced to delay access roads for up to a month if government does not take effect on the moratorium.

18-year-old. parts of the state have received 14-inches of snow and counting. missouri's kansas city international airport has been shut down for much of the day. it's not expected to reopen until tomorrow afternoon. boy a completely different story here. bill. a nice day today. >> really nice day with warmer daytime highs. temperatures today got into the low 50s. highs tomorrow for your saturday. warmer still. we're going to see numbers tomorrow maybe into the mid-60s in some of your warmest spots. so another beautiful day for your friday. slight sprinkle in the forecast. you see all the activity, all the rain that we need. all the snow that we need going this way. it's all north of us. there's a bit of a flow going down the coast here and that's keeping temperatures on the cool side. we're looking for overnight lows tonight. to be pretty chilly. these are the current temperatures. it's not bad now but the overnight lows are lower than they were last night. 60 right now in santa rosa.

that's fairly warm. 61 in antioch and 56 in hayward. so forecast highs tomorrow, warmer than what we had today. overnight lows will be chilly. there's been some wind out there. a little breezy. these are the current wind observations. we have a north wind at 18. west wind out here at 15. so the winds kind of brisk out here. kind of chilly. even though you're hitting upper 50s, upper 60s the wind really creates a windchill for you. there's your freezing in napa. what's interesting here, i got a 35 in santa rosa but if you go out to the rincon valley, east of town. if you go west of town out toward sebasta pool. you will find freezing temperatures. we have frost too. we'll see it again tomorrow morning. that's it for rain. we're not going to see any rain coming up here. really until we get into late friday night. early saturday morning. we'll talk more about that. but first we start with the overnight lows.

purples are 30. that's just a broad brush. it's not exact but it's nice that they're mapping it. it shows you how chilly the entire bay area is going to be. even around the bay. we expect quite a bit warmer. you're looking at 40s, mid-40s low 40s around the bay in places like fremont and oakland. chilly tomorrow. greens are 60s, yellows are 70s. not 70s but you will see plenty of 50s are the lower blues. temperatures tomorrow warmer than they were today. it's friday, as you get into saturday there's a chance of showers and sprinkles. as we come back we will time that out so you can plan your weekend because it's almost here. a piece of a tragedy is here. how it will be a reminder of one of the worse times in the country. >> an armed escort for some bay area kids.

more live pictures from news chopper 2 of that crane that toppled over this afternoon. what they've been doing here is cutting that crane into pieces presumably so that they can haul them away. the crane was positioned on that barge there when it toppled over about 12:30 this afternoon. if there is any good news here, this is not going to affect construction of the new bay bridge. it is still set to open on labor day which is 193 days

several around the country to receive a piece of the world trade center. a formal dedication for the memorial is set for this spring. google is adding a new touch screen device to its line of chrome laptops. the new pixel chrome also include a megapixel display. its price starts at $1,300. google's chrome books were being billed as its most affordable, with some costing under $200. profits came in at 94-cent as share beating analysts forecast of the 74-cents. safeway stock was up today closing at $22.97 that's up $2.84.

into pieces it will be used to take down construction supports. no one was hurt and no damage was done to the bridge. the contractor caltrans and cal osha will all be investigating the incident. one of three people killed in a shooting and fiery crash in the las vegas strip is from the area. one person in a range rover shot at a massoroti. the driver of the massoroti died and ktvu has confirmed he was ken cherry jr. from oakland. an argument started in the valet area of the aria resort. he was on parol in texas and now he's accused of committing another vicious crime here in the area. and the question is, how did he move without alerting officials. >> reporter: the question is how did a parolee with this

kind of record go under the radar. he violated parol then didn't register as a sex offender here. now the san francisco d.a. is calling this man a monster. arthur salinas is back in court facing charges. a few hours ago the 57-year-old stood before a judge. we were not allowed to record his face. but this is his mug shot. police say sunday night, salina struck up a conversation with the victim while at a store on sutter street around 11:00 at night. they walked out together and a block later he pushed her into a stairwell, overpowered her and attacked her. leaving her in pretty bad shape. not very long after, officers and svu investigators discovered salina near by arresting him. >> this guy is really a monster. you know he is someone that obviously is unable to rehabilitate himself. he already hurt someone before. he spent a substantial amount of time in prison and then came

back here and reoffended and hurt someone else. what we want to make sure is he doesn't get out again. >> reporter: salinas is pa or -l after serving half of his sentence in texas -- salinas was paroled after serving half of his sentence in texas he now faces life in a california prison. salinas is accused of several counts of aggravated and sexual assault and failing to register as a sex offender. >> reporter: his arrangement was pushed back until monday. his bail is set at $3 million. but because he violated his parol, even if salinas could come up with the money he will not be released. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. we're getting late word of a sit in inside of a building in city college of san francisco. this comes after a rally earlier today where students called for more open communication between students and administrators. this as the school fights to

keep its accreditation. students are concerned about proposed cuts to services. the administration has until march 15 to show how it's addressing problems sited last july in an accreditation report. the lists included too many campuses and too much money spent on noninstructional faculty expenses. we have a crew headed to the school to get more information as soon as we get it we will pass it along to you. a humble county man is due back in court in april after pleading not guilty to 11 felony drug charges. deputies found 300 guns stored on the property. deputies also found 115 pounds of marijuana plus jury and vehicles that had been reported stolen. the fbi has wrapped up its latest search in san joaquin

county. the week's long excavation of a well outside of stockton turned up no new human remains or evidence. the well is 200 yards from another site where investigators last year found remains of three women and a fetus thought to be victims of shermantine and herzog. the fbi says it has no plans to dig at other well sites unless they get new evidence. police have arrested two women and charged them with set ago fire in a former cheese factory. that massive fire broke out tuesday night in a massive plant. the women got into a dispute with a man and tried to set him on fire. the city wants them out. the homeless encampment near the airport there has to go. but ktvu's janine de la vega spoke to some of the people living there and they said they're doing the best they can and they wonder doesn't the

city have anything better to do? >> reporter: the roar of jet engines is frequently heard in this field next to the san jose airport. some of the 100 or so people living here say sometimes their tents shake by the sounds. after being asked to move out, they came here. ibarra showed us her sleeping quarters and her food and changing area. she told us she used to be an inhome care nurse but quit her job to take care of a relative. after that relative died, ibarra was out of money and out of a job. >> i'm doing the best i can with what i have. i'm not a criminal, i'm not you know, i'm just like anybody else. just falling on hard times. >> reporter: the city has received many complaints from residents who worry about garbage piling up. the city plans to clear out the

there is a strange new twist in the case of olympian oscar pistorius who is accused of shooting his girlfriend. the lead investigators were being replaced because the detective is being accused of firing shots into a mini bus. south africa's top detective is now personally handling the pistorius investigation. the fourth and final victim of former los angeles police officer christopher dorner was laid to rest today in san

bernardino. bag pipes played, the coffin carrying sheriff detective jeremiah mccay entered the san manuel amphitheater. mccay was 35 years old and a 15 year veteran of the county sheriff's department. >> i would refer to him as a cop's cop. and i believe that is one of the highest honors we can bestow one of our peers. >> reporter: deputy mccay leaves behind a wife and two children. turns out seniors are not getting much protection from this year's flu shot. federal investigators say it's only 9% effective for people 65 and older and they say they're baffled as to why. they are still recommending the shots saying some protection is better than no protection. they say that the shots can also lessen the symptoms if you get sick. like to go out for sushi

a startling report tonight of widespread fraud on fish labeling in the bay area. activists say most of the time they are being cheated getting something other than what you paid for especially if you

order certain items from the sushi bar. john fowler here in the city with how activists found out about all of this, john. >> reporter: fishermen almost certainly know what they've got. distributors likely do too. by the time it gets to you that fish very likely could be called something else, a higher priced name. activists say they genetically tested 178 seafood samples in northern california finding 27% of super markets and half of seafood markets selling fish mislabeled under fda rules. >> the most come comprehensive study we found fraud rampant. >> reporter: red snapper for instance was never red snapper. 58% of all restaurants and 100% of sushi restaurants mislead customers. more than 3/4 of all sushi

institute says sales reached a record $1.3 million last year. it also says exports grew for the third consecutive year. the figures are great news for california because 90% of u.s. wine exports come from our state. more than 1/3 of the sales went to europe. that's california's top foreign market. sales to canada and asian are also up significantly. the food and drug administration know says that parents shouldn't give their children codine after tonsillitis surgery. there was evidence that children were rapidly metabolize the codine. the agency will now require a written warning on all medicine labels containing the drug. health officials say water inside a downtown los angeles hotel tank where a body was found this week is in fact, safe. the body of 21-year-old alisa lam was found tuesday in the water tank on top of the cecil

hotel. authorities say samples taken from the water didn't contain any live bacteria that would cause illness. lam traveled to los angeles from canada and was last seen at the cecil hotel on january 21st. she had also planned to travel to santa cruz. united airlines has eliminating the boeing 787 from its schedule until june. united is also postponing its new direct flight from denver to tokyo. the fleet of 787s have been grounded worldwide as investigators search for the cause of a battery fire in one plane and an emergency landing of another plane due to an overheated battery. nasa is warning a giant sun spot can flair up and cause communication problems this week. the sun spot developed quickly on tuesday and wednesday and according to scientists it's big enough to swallow six event sized plants. sun spots form from the

comment on our report. 31-year-old john jeffrey quianzon was charged for five felonies. the suit shows that he also molested another patient in 2009 and that the hospital did not report it. the hospital says it is cooperating with the investigation. the fbi is apparently dealing with a rash of sexting cases among its own employees. that's according to internal disciplinary reports. the fbi says that it hopes to send the message out to its employees that they cannot use their business phone to send improper texts or photos. 85 ended up being fired.
